1502 Otis Street, “An Urban Oasis”

 “The root of all reform lies in the individual, and the life of the individual is shaped mainly by home surroundings.”  So said Gustav Stickley, champion of the turn-of-the-century Arts & Crafts movement.  Honest lines, natural materials, and superior craftsmanship are all characteristic of the Arts & Crafts period which spanned the beginning of the 1890’s through about 1915.
Though this cozy home was built in 1934, Mission-style furniture, blue art pottery, and William Morris wallpaper recapture the Arts & Crafts spirit.  As you make your way from room to room, you will find that an antique style dominates but that the eclectic tastes of the owners could not be suppressed.  Each room proclaims its own identity.  Walnut woodwork and glass doorknobs throughout the house provide the only continuity.  And, in a testament to maternal love, all of the curtains were hand stitched by Caroline’s mother, Ruth
